Audrey Kawasaki

Outré Gallery on Elizabeth St is one of my favourite art galleries in Melbourne. They exhibit and sell artworks that are always slightly subversive but incredibly enchanting.

Yesterday I went to see the Audrey Kawasaki showing Overlap, ten of her prints plus an original created just for Outre. She paints on wood and her work is so intricate and pretty and ethereal. Sweet and innocent and seductive, melancholic and disturbing all at the same time. Getting your paws on a print is near impossible but go have a look. It’s only on till tomorrow.

The last two are my favourite.

  1. “Innocent” would be the last word I would use to describe Kawakaski’s work. A repeat of Bill Henson’s controversial “child porn” exhibit perhaps? But I can understand why the work is so popular, they are beautifully drawn. That, and sex sells.

  2. Kawasaki*

    excuse my typo :)

  3. They have a certain vulnerability though I think. They’re a little sinister but I didn’t think they were sexual.

  4. Hmm..they probably didn’t exhibit the more explicit stuff then did they?

I do actually like her style of illustration, so I’m not hating on her or anything, theres nothing wrong with erotic art!
