Dakiya

My friend Shivraj, who is generally just rad and brilliant, has been making things with his hands. His postman wallet is a genius invention and I use the shit out of mine. It’s a wallet for artists and spiffy people, pocket sized and super nifty.

It’s actually comical when myself and all our friends reach for our wallets these days because they’re all versions of the postman. I was kind of obsessed with mine for a while, and  took a bunch of photos for him and one day we ordered pizza and scanned a whole bunch of stuff together. He’s got a bunch of versions like the telegram and airmail too with denim or leather and even a vegan version (no leather trim) but for now, find the waxed canvas seamail and inland in his webshop or barter with him!

Queen of the Jungle

How did nobody inform me that Sheena: Queen of the Jungle had such bomb ass cover art? All my life I’ve been rolling my eyes when people called me that and now I’m wondering what the hell was wrong with me. Look at her fierce outfits. Jungle chicness gleuteus maximus.

Final Cut

I’ve often gone past the woodcarving workshops on that long Mahim strip, taking mental note that I should one day visit, be inquisitive and take photographs of their fussy, intricate furniture and accessories. In Final Cut, German curator Tobias Megerle marries the artisans’ traditional handiwork with a western element and lifestyle to create the functional but fancy Mumbai skateboard. The exhibition showcases not only the ornate finished products but photos of the twelve participating artists posing with their pieces. Faceless no more, the show at The Loft in Lower Parel (same complex as the Blue Frog) is currently on as part of the series Solicited Perspectives till April 12th.

Amrita Bagchi

My girl Amrita’s work is now on the cover of Time Out magazine. A  detailed and fantastically bizarre illustration adorns the Mumbai edition this month, and the Delhi edition last.

And she’s not just an illustrator. Artist, graphic designer, experimental filmmaker, photographer. The girl paints murals, she sings, she cooks, she exhibits. Her current exhibition runs till 18th March at Studio 21, in Calcutta.

Her blogs showcase a thoughtful and vivid collection of commercial and personal work. Graphic design and illustration can be found here, and her photography here. The Mahishadal Palace slideshows are especially wonderful.

Hire her please, so she won’t have to go to an office and can play with me all day instead.

Zahir

Talented Rhett Dashwood at Melbourne’s Wade Studios which produces some fantastic creative work made a weird little mirror music video for kicks. I’m in it at some point. Whee. So much fun.

Card Party

Thought I’d blog about my new cards because they are the business! The other day I found these boxes of blank cards made from handmade paper in a store and I had to make them mine. I’d already decided that printed, glossy cards were just not going to cut the mustard.

I love me some of that handmade aesthetic but I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted. I still have the handwriting of a seven year old  so that was out, cutouts were ridiculous and tedious, I suck at Photoshop (unless you want to hire me in which case its like I was born-to-edit), letterpress was favoured but my family’s printshop has been reduced to rubble and then I had it – my grandfather’s beast of a typewriter!

So yes, each card is individually typed out, which leaves lots of room for imperfections and I am okay with that. I chose the tan for the paper because with age and the crinkles and creases, it starts to look like well worn suede. It does take a little while longer than handing off cards to a printer but who am I kidding? I have lots of spare time. I had enough spare time to make a card tower. Also punching those keys makes the most satisfying sounds.

Only card party I’m throwing. Happy Diwali. I’m off to Calcutta tomorrow.

Paris vs NYC

Art director and graphic designer Vahram Muratyan contrasts two of my favourite cities in Paris versus New York, the tally of two cities. The friendly visual match, as seen by the Parisian based lover of New York , illustrates details, cliches and contradictions in the loveliest diptychs. Check out the project for a few more.

Saturday Night Markets

Goa has some brilliant markets! Anjuna market is the best day market and at night, there’s Ingo’s and Mackies. Find out if they’re on and go before you get too drunk, or just get drunk there, they have beer. They have all the usual handicraft/novelty nonsense and lots of stalls selling beautiful clothes and accessories by independent hippie designers. I bought my rickshaw horn (aka my doorbell) and we walked through Kunaal tooting people in our way. Heeeee!

You can buy Rajasthani dolls. I love these. Buy me some.

Gorgeous hand painted shirts.

Venkat, Jonathan and Kunaal. They are the loveliest boys. <3

Amazing handmade yellow shoes. I wanted so bad but at Rs. 1800, we just bought a million pants instead.

Venkat bought pizza. It was deeeeelicious. Goa sausage and chilli. Nom.

Kitschy shopping bags.

Last resort

I’m allergic to cold weather. It’s a real problem. I need to live in a town/city with sweltering summers and balmy winters and then I can just shop from each season’s resort collections. I love Alexander Wang 2010 resort collection, so not your usual boring Breton stripes nonsense.

I really hate black right now. She says while wearing a black batwing dress. Meh.

Lunchbreath

Spent a good hour looking at the work of Lunchbreath, a Chicago based art director who pokes fun at contemporary culture and simplifies everything from relationships and politics, to economics and geography via charts and diagrams. These two favourites exemplify the depressing reality of being a creative.
