Pretty/Good

I’ve been recycling. Stolen designer drink bottles make beautiful vases to stolen wedding flower arrangements. One happy criminal window sill.

Bombay Farmers Market

Founded by Kavita Mukhi, the Sunday organic farmers market returns for its second season to Nilgiri Gardens, in Bandra, and other locations around Bombay.

Two weeks ago, I headed there with Shaheen and Hayley and bought the most gorgeous red cabbage, so crunchy and fabulous in a stir fry or a sandwich, some pretty peppers to fill with sausage or cream cheese, and some fantastic fresh mint.

Visitors can buy organically certified fresh fruit and vegetables directly from farmers at the market, and there is plenty to choose from – beets with beetstalks, courgettes, broccoli, everything else.

There are your average art market stalls – healing crystals, handmade clothes, natural cosmetics and some sweet handicrafts and toys. There was a stall selling water in beautiful glass bottles that now make stunning vases at home. There’s an organic cafe too, but it didn’t impress much on a day I wasn’t feeling Gujarati thali and golas. But I definitely regret not buying this tasty rice flour cookie mix.

There’s plenty to entertain small humans too, I’m almost jealous I’m too old to lie on the ground and have someone draw my outline in chalk in the play area.

But my favourite find was Anand Bhave, an architecture tutor, eco furniture designer, artist and origami teacher. We stumbled upon his kitschy little round table made entirely from recycled paper and he gave us each carefully calligraphed name bookmarks in natural inks, using fragrant flowers for yellows and oranges; then showed a little girl how to make a dozen hats out of newspaper.

His innate creativity and concern for the environment coupled with his unaffected generosity made it such a delightful encounter. It takes about three months for him to make a piece of furniture, so in January, a sturdy round table will be mine.

All in all, a really nice way to spend a part of the afternoon so go now while it’s still one of the city’s secrets. I hope they get some cheese and free range eggs soon.

The markets are on from 11am to 6pm every Sunday. Check out their bacefook page or the venue roster.

Reasons to Plant a Tree

So you don’t have to wear this in the future.

Although I secretly love it. Bio-Accessories was on display at Melbourne City Library (my library!) and was the brainchild of designers Ben Landau and Brittany Veitch. Described as ‘an effort on the wearers behalf to green their own personal space’, this collection was part couture, part social commentary.

Monsieur Truffe

Last week, on our Fitzroy + Collingwood exploits, Soha and I peeked through beaded curtains after a heady fragrance of chocolate piqued my curiosity in the street. Inside was a beautiful chocolate shop and cafe owned and run by lovely French chocolatier Thibault Fregoni. He was lovely so we decided to stay and try something. He answered my million questions in his lilting French accent and joked about being born in Brunswick and putting it on merely for authenticity. He makes the chocolate on campus in a little couverture kitchen at the back. The specialty is single origin chocolate and his range is divine.

The Smith St space opened in September of 2008, moving from its regular spot at Prahran market. The cafe is a lovely place to relax, with cool wallpapers and art, and natural light which cast pretty shadows of its name on a wall. Monsieur Truffe has lots of comfortable seating including these cool card stools and serves tea, coffee and the best hot chocolate and iced chocolate I’ve had in ages. Both were exquisitely silken. I cannot drink anything powdered ever again. They also serve up goodies like delicious croissants and flourless chocolate cake and sell their amazing chocolate bars and chocolate drinks.

I like that the eco-friendly Monsieur has made a conscious effort not to use plastic. No plastic bags, and even the straws are biodegradable, made of corn. Ecopreneurship FTW.

Greenhouse by Joost

I’m late in posting this so if you didn’t go, you’ve missed it cos it’s long gone but the temporary fixture in Federation Square that was Greenhouse by Joost was one of the best things in Melbourne this Summer. I went a couple of times and had coffee on the recycled signpost chairs and once soaked up the sun on the rooftop terrace with its little veggie garden. Such a memorable venue although it left no footprint. It was lovely and airy, insulated with hay bales, with strawberry plant pots lining one side, with light cages and wire boxes filled with old lightbulbs. Staff wore vintage uniforms.

You could tell designer Joost Bakkar put his heart into this idea. Greenhouse was built to inspire and challenge “the current vernacular on minimizing the impact on the planet, whilst dishing us degustation fare and operating as a unique gallery, cafe, bar and public space…it would also educate, generate debate, and serve as a model for a cheaper, more spirit-lifting form of public housing in our suburbs.” And it was built entirely from recycled or recyclable materials.

Beverages like Little Creatures beer, coffee and old fashioned lemonade were served up in recycled glass jars and bottles. The lemonade was delicious, unsweetened and the best I’ve ever had.

This is a bicycle I saw parked outside. I want to be friends with this person.

I’ve heard rumours of Greenhouse travelling to the Milan Furniture Fair and making a comeback in a new spot but while that is still unfounded, I’ve got my fingers crossed.

Sustainable Living Festival

The dreamiest people I know love the simple things in life and want more than anything to get back to basics. And let’s face it, being a bicycle loving, tree hugging, recycling green pixie is ultra sexy so this weekend, we shall be heading down the road to Federation Square for the Sustainable Living Festival.

slffestival

There are seminars, exhibitors, performances and events on everything from top ten reasons to grow your own food, culture, organics, empowering fashionistas to save the world, living car free, and the Street Spawn Eco-Fashion Parade  and the Mad Hatters Fair Trade Tea Parties. I’ve got sweaty palms from excitement.
