City Pockets

Sunless days, making me wonder what I actually like about Bombay. Maybe these pockets of delight. Mostly Colaba, but some Bandra and elsewhere.

Le Mill is an expansive, expensive concept store in the middle of nowhere. But it’s beautiful and thoughtfully accessorised (I love the crows, the pencils, the candles and the lighting), has very sleek branding and is worth one visit.

Pretty embroidered linen and doilies shop on Colaba Causeway.

Gaiety Galaxy. At Rs.75 a ticket, it’s the best multiplex for a movie marathon.

Bungalow 8 is in one of the most gorgeous buildings in the city and is a beautifully curated interiors and fashion store. I love the menswear and vintage on the third floor and the deliberate holes in the wall on the furnishings floor.

Also 15 of my pictures of Chor Bazaar were published in Wallpaper* in one of the Reborn in India issue’s guest editor blogs.

Sita Sings The Blues

Hibernated with my favourite person and watched this feature film yesterday. Sita Sings the Blues is an animated retelling of the Ramayana by the extra-talented-and-I-am-now-in-awe-of Nina Paley who wrote, directed, produced and animated it. Narration of the Ramayana, punctuated with irreverent shadow puppet commentary and scenes from the director’s own life, with perfectly sychronised musical interludes with 1920s jazz musician Annette Hanshaw’s songs. The animations are beautifully rendered and alternate between different styles. It’s a brilliant film, a delightful interpretation of this ancient epic.

Ultra violet

I don’t know how but in the span of a month, I found myself at two completely separate black light shoots. One was fun because I got to finger paint fluorescent tribal designs on some traditional feather and hide masks, the other because the dancers we dressed were fucking fantastic. Both were splendid, both I photographed. These pictures are from a song sequence in a Bollywood film that I worked on as wardrobe assistant.

Cemetery Junction Teaser

Ricky Gervais. Ralph Fiennes. Some other dude. Enough said.

Do Começo ao Fim

I just got sent the link to this trailer for the Brazilian film Do Começo Ao Fim directed by Aluisio Abranches. It looks so eerie and taboo but I’d still really like to see it. Foreign films are the freaking best. Watch the trailer.

First glimpse

My friends have been shooting a short film and for the last week and a bit, I’ve been busy screwing up my already heinous sleep cycle by acting in it. We shoot only at night and I don’t think we’ve spent a single moment not intoxicated. I wrapped up my scenes today and these are some pictures from on set, thanks to my buddy Sushant Chhabria. I’ll post some of our film stills if and when I can. I can’t spare many details but I am the vulgar female lead and we have a pretty stellar cast I’d say including Jackie Shroff and as exhausting as it’s been, it’s been so much fun. Plus I’m the only tantrum thrower so that’s always nice.

Paper Heart

I will probably watch this movie twice at a cinema near me. I have no idea when it’s out but I love Michael Cera with all my heart and it looks adorable. OMG, do I see a Demetri Martin cameo. Yes, yes, I do.

A Film With Me In It

Tonight, I saw A Film with Me in It (I’m not in it, that’s just what it’s called) and I loved it. Granted, it’s not for everyone. You have to have a certain penchant for black comedy. An Irish confection directed by Ian Fitzgibbon and written by Mark Doherty (my very own David O’Doherty’s brother), the film centers around his character and Dylan Moran’s Pearce. David plays Mark’s disabled brother. The film brims with accidental tragedies, and dark dark humour. Grim and overwhelming, quirky and hilarious, it serves up surprise upon macabre surprise, Dylan mumbles some of his best lines, Mark is brilliant and their companionship is enviable. I just narrated the entire plot to my friend, and his expressions embodied glee, shock, relish and disdain which describes it pretty well. You might enjoy it if you did Choke or Burn After Reading. If you’re in Melbourne, then it’s on at Cinema Nova on Lygon St right now. Dylan was even at the local premiere, I’m pretty sure. If you’re not here, check your listings.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona

I saw Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona when it first came out. I loved the cinematography, the beautiful Spanish architecture, all Maria Elena’s (Penelope Cruz’ character) outfits. And much to my dismay, Scarlett Johansson’s character Cristina strongly resonated with me. Even or rather especially, her niggling bad habits.

The chronic dissatisfaction.

The not knowing what she wants, just knowing what she doesn’t.

And lastly and most importantly this thing she says:-
“No. I just have to come face to face with the fact that I am not gifted, you know? I can appreciate art and I love music, but… It’s sad, really, because I feel like I have a lot to express and I am not gifted.”

The point of all this is to mention that I have an idea for a new venture. I might not be artistically gifted, but I am surrounded by artists and I do possess a major desire to see them succeed. There are a few things that inspired this new project, one that I may even work full time on one day and I’ll be starting on it soon.

500 Days of Summer

When I was 12, I had a gargantuan crush on Joseph. Fast forward one decade and I have a huge crush on Zooey. I am going to like this movie a lot. An eternal sucker for a cute film with a cute soundtrack,  I’ll probably keep it with my Junos and Garden States and Amelies and Little Miss Sunshines. Watch the trailer and do not judge, kthx.

I think the title of this movie is the best idea ever. Yes please.
