Oh my life, they’re designing for the new decade already. Can you imagine us looking back at these ten years and talking about how things are so noughties influenced? Yuk. It’s nearly October and I’m still waiting for this year to redeem itself. 2009, I hate you. But Moschino, I love. I probably own half a dozen pieces. Most recently, a fantastic vintage Cheap and Chic waistcoat, a hand-me-down from my 17 year old cousin. Their entire Spring 2010 collection at Milan Fashion Week was playful and pretty, the cool headpieces, the touch of tacky gold. All tasty morsels.

Eeeee! My ultimate dreamboat Teva is in the newest Stolen Girlfriend’s Club campaign Weapons of Mass Seduction shot by Derek Henderson, one of my favourite ever photographers. You can also watch the collection video here and hear Teva’s cute little French accent. I’m going to have to ask him who he’s talking about. Also these women’s pieces are hot.

New shoes and a toy poodle

I have new shoes! They’re called mojris – a style of footwear that originated in Jodhpur. They’re an awesome shade of green and are made entirely from the softest hide. I walked past them on Colaba Causeway in Bombay and the image of them on my feet burned into my mind, so I had to go back and buy them. I love coloured leather. On this pair, you can do as you please with the front bit, which I like.

When I first came to Melbourne, a Nigel-no-friends exchange student a few years ago, I fell in love with the city and its secrets. I was an great lover in the beginning, always exploring and finding new things to like but I’ve turned into this lazy girlfriend, who takes living in the CBD for granted and spends far too much time in bed alone with pudding and overdue library books I don’t even read. I’ve let myself go.

So the little sister I never had and I decided to uncover Fitzroy and Collingwood, well Gertrude and Smith St if we’re being specific, and we ended up having the best afternoon evarrrr.

Soha, outside the Dianne Tanzer gallery (108-110 Gertrude St) we visited. There are so many free art exhibitions on at Gertrude St at any given time. And how good is her hat? OMFG.

We went to so many beautiful antique and collectibles shops. You can buy all sorts of vintage – road signs, furniture, memorabilia, etc. This incredible one was on Gertrude St.

Stores with great styling. Like Shappere (91 Smith St) with their work benches for belts and hand beater collection and handbags.

Outlet stores. Sneakers and bras and lycra for miles.

Mad, cool or over the top salons like the uber pink Lure (311 Smith St) and barbers that all have beer like Dr Follicles Barber Shop (240 Gertrude St)

First we stopped off for a snack at an authentic little family owned Greek diner called Melissa (118 Smith St) which was all too cliche and amusing. The owners and their family all sat at one table gossiping and arguing. The spanakopita was delicious.

We also found the most divine chocolate cafe. Photos soon. Then this lovely, rambling Turkish man at Fitzroy Kebabs (near the corner of Gertrude St and Smith St) felt sorry for these two undernourished beige girls and kept bringing us treat after treat. We only bought a gozleme to share, and we left with free plums, baklava and filled pide for dinner.

I don’t know what he was thinking either. Seriously, best day ever.

No Vacancy Art Market

The No Vacancy gallery space at Melbourne’s QV always has great stuff on like killer art exhibitions or that kooky PR driven Indoor Drive-In. I was the supermarket buying soy milk and apple crumble (unemployment cuisine) and stumbled upon the No Vacancy Art Market totally by chance and it is quite wonderful. It’s been on for a while but I caught the late boat. It’s running for only another couple of days till May 17th, and the spiel from the website explains it best. ‘Twenty stalls presenting emerging and established local talent in the Gallery’s inner-city space over four weeks. Illustrators, artists, jewellers, designers, animators, rare booksellers and an eclectic mix of hand-picked others come together to showcase their wares and offer a rare opportunity to collect original work.” I took some pictures. I loved the Artist’s Puzzle Book, a compilation of puzzles hand drawn by Melbourne artists. And Zoe Churchill’s stoneware and Curious Moth’s illustrations.

Full of gorgeous finds, I wish more people chose markets over malls. Market love.

Accessories at the 09/10 Fall/Winter RTW show included classic bags in thermoformed packaging with pockets containing an iPod, a No 5 perfume and sunglasses.

Happy Easter! Excuse me, I have fallen into a food coma, there’s a Lindt dark chocolate bunny sitting across the table judging me and my finger tips are almost too fat to type, but I thought I’d share with you the prettiest critters and one of the most inspirational blogs I have ever seen.

Essimar Papel is an Etsy store where Chicago based artist Esther Ramirez sells her paper collages and notecards. She has quite a way with colour and patterns and she works with paper and a range of techniques from dotting, die cutting, silkscreening and layering to create these remarkable little artworks.

And her blog is where she documents her eye for beauty and her creativity and it is wonderful to see.

Another Barry to love

I knew today was gonna be a good day when the courier fellow woke me at an absurdly early hour to give me my pink unicorn. Teva had bought me a macbook sleeve online at Barry’s Farm when he was here ages ago and I excitedly checked my front door each day in anticipation. The original never arrived but was promptly replaced by them and sent by priority mail. As all unicorns should be.

It’s made of really high quality vinyl, is padded with foam, has a pink lining and it makes my lappy deliriously happy. I’m so impressed with Barry’s Farm – designer Barry and his girlfriend Katie make their products by hand, their laptop case range includes monsters, hedgehogs and cupcakes, and their customer service is excellent. Total heart.

Even though I’m a practicing recessionista at the moment, I’ve seen several incredible stores in Melbourne lately so prepare for an influx of words and pictures about them. I’ve blogged about Lenko before albeit briefly, so here are some more photos from the Melbourne Central store that make it the happiest place on Earth. Well, after Disneyland, The Fairy Shop on Ponsonby Rd, American Apparel..

They have unlucky dips. Curiosity got the better of me and I tried. They’re really unlucky, it’s not even ironic.

Despite Edward Said making me miserable when I had to write research papers at university, I’d like his face on my lapel.

Sonny Vandevelde

I guess it’s the voyeur in me but as far as non-editorial high fashion photographers go, Sonny Vandevelde is probably my favourite. Like an exclusive backstage pass, he offers a behind the scenes look at fashion week collections and he’s tight with my boy Bryan. (Not that I’m tight with Bryanboy, but shut up, this isn’t about me)

I love Sonny’s work because I think just about anyone can take decent runway shots. Heck, I’ve been in a photo pit at Fashion Week with a cheap fixed lens and my photos weren’t half bad. The lighting is perfect, all you need is a good angle and a quick shutter. I like that his photos are a glimpse into the models personalities and a different, more dynamic look at the collection.

Here are some of my favourites from Fall/Winter 09 in Milan, Paris, New York. I spent hours choosing these, they’re delicious, I love you Sonny! My eyes are burning from the greatness of these outfits. You can see whole collections at Hint.
